We usually don’t use the same type of tile all over the bathroom and mix them up using some on the walls, some on the floor and maybe some more for accenting. How to mix and match bathroom tiles right to achieve a cool and not tasteless look? Here are some tips.
How To Mix And Match Tiles Right?
Pick your must have tile first and then look for a match. Typically when we start a bathroom renovation we have one tile that we dream of including in our design. Sometimes it is a really special or unique accent tile and sometimes it is as simple as knowing that you want white subway tile. Rock not more than three different tiles to achieve a stylish look – too many different tiles won’t bring elegance. Consider maintenance: tiles made from natural stone require more maintenance and do have to be sealed. Bathrooms are very wet areas and you may want porcelain or ceramic tile since they are almost maintenance free.
Take special note of tile finishes, especially when designing a bathroom/kitchen in a home where there are elderly/young occupants. Pick non-slip tiles and also options that are less dark because they suit conventional design tastes better. Black tiles are the best ones for family homes because they tend to require more upkeep to maintain their look.
An important rule is that there should only be one tile finish on a single surface. For example, if a homeowner wishes to have an accent wall in their bathroom’s shower area, they should stick to using either all glossy or all matte tiles – mixing tiles with two different finishes would just create a clashing look. Moreover, by sticking to one finish, it’ll make it easier to accommodate a wider range of tile shapes on the same wall. At the same time, it’s important not to go overboard with shapes and colors because having too much of either creates visual clutter. Unless you’re feeling adventurous or have a good eye, leave the mixing-and-matching to a designer! It might seem like a tiny detail, but the corners and/or edges of a surface will make or break the look of tilework, so it’s important to get them right. Now let’s take a look how to mix and match.
