This mountain retreat was restored from a rustic shepherd’s hut, once used to make cheese. The hut is located in Cantal’s volcanic Central Massif region, France. Austrian Frederick Pfeffer restored the place with the help of local craftsmen and artisans using simple and natural materials. The atmosphere is very romantic and old-fashioned: absence of electricity, a wood fired stove keeps the place warm and candles are used for lighting at night. Benches made by local craftsmen feature felt coverings strapped on with leather ties. Simple handmade wood furnishings and horsehair cushions that double as beds if needed. The kitchen and shower are located downstairs. Water is sourced from a nearby spring. I can’t imagine a place that would be further away from civilization and more charming at the same time.
