Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Balcony Herb Garden
First of all, choose your herbs. Start with easy-to-grow ones like basil, mint, parsley, and thyme. Next, choose a way to organize them based on our tips and examples above.
Buy the necessary pots and potting soil. Fill containers with soil, leaving space for the herbs. Plant seeds or seedlings and water thoroughly afterward. Label your pots and place your herbs in a spot that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.
Water regularly, trim back overgrown plants, and check for pests. Don’t forget to harvest herbs regularly by cutting the stems above a leaf node to encourage new growth.

Growing herbs on your apartment balcony isn’t that hard. Most of the thrive in balcony conditions. We recommend these ones:

- Thyme and Oregano are low-maintenance herb that enjoys full sun. They has a strong flavor and is excellent for seasoning meats and vegetables. These are staples for Italian and Mediterranean cuisine.
- Rosemary is a woody herb that needs plenty of sunlight. It’s perfect for balconies and can be used fresh or dried in cooking. We love to add it to our steaks.
- Chives grow well in containers and need full sun. Their mild onion flavor is perfect for garnishing dishes. Who doesn’t enjoy a delicious Chinese stir-fry?
