This beach house was inspired by well-known Bay Area architect William Wurster, who designed the earlier home that burned down on the site. It’s designed by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architects to capture the spirit of the original house while meeting seismic codes and federal requirements for homes in high-risk coastal zones. The structure sits on wood posts with rod bracing like a fishing pier, permitting floodwaters to run underneath. Major rooms are surrounded by decks and outdoor living spaces that take full advantage of the views to both the Pacific Ocean and the Marin Hills. The flanking wings for sitting room and dining room are enclosed for year-round use and become vivid nature-viewing pavilions overlooking the ocean. The ramp has evolved into a kind of amphitheater-stair. Natural materials all around the house make it well suited to the site and dream place to live. [Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architects]
