The natural properties of wood are part of the design in Jalmari Laihinen’s Broken collection. Wood cracks, breaks and has defects, and Broken is an ongoing investigation into breaking wood. Often pieces with imperfections are discarded as unwanted, but their value should be embraced as unique. That’s why the connecting parts, the legs of stools and tables for example, have been broken, showing splinters of wood at the points of rupture. Laihinen’s work combines cabinetmaking, carving and furniture design with the aim to produce playful, thought-provoking works. Would you dare to make a statement in your home with such furniture?
