Backwater by London-based Platform 5 Architects sits on a small promontory in a secluded lagoon in the Norfolk Broads and offers a contemporary counterpoint to more traditionally designed neighboring houses, while respecting the peaceful natural setting.
The house consists of several volumes with gable roofs, they are all connected in one and remind more of a countryside cottage. The inside is more modern and I’d say even minimalist. The base for all the spaces are white walls and whitewashed greyish floors, such a palette is neutral, peaceful and can be used as a backdrop for almost any design. There’s much wood in the décor but it’s also whitewashed and greyish, and there are just some warm woods, which gives the spaces a somewhat Scandinavian feel.
The kitchen and the dining room are united into one light-filled space, the kitchen is modern and laconic, and the focal point is the view on the lake. The dining nook features a gorgeous lack wooden table of bold orange color and a comfy corner leather sofa.
As for the living room, the views are also used to advantage, and warm-colored upholstery and a large hearth with firewood storage make the room more inviting and cozy.
The master bedroom is amazing: a glazed wall gives the full views of the lake, and when you need some privacy, curtains are here. A large comfy bed is all you need in such a room – just relax and go to sleep!
