An undermount sink is a basin that is attached to the counter or vanity top from below the surface. The edge lip of the sink is mounted below a solid surface countertop, so the sink effectively hangs underneath the counter and creates a continuous flow from countertop into sink. Such sinks look modern and fresh anywhere but you may be still hesitating if to choose one or not. Let’s consider some pros and cons to make the right choice.
Pros
You can get up as much as 1/2 square foot of extra countertop space when the rim is underneath the countertop. You can wipe counter debris straight into the sink—no rim to obstruct you – such a sink is very easy to clean, which makes it an ideal kitchen piece. Undermount sinks are visually attractive since they do not interrupt the plane of the countertop. The countertop should be of solid surface materials like granite, soapstone, marble, or concrete as with other options you won’t be able to install an undermount sink.

Cons
Undermount sinks are usually slightly more expensive than self-rimming sinks. The installation is more difficult, requiring clamps and adhesives; proper installation and sealing is crucial to prevent leakage and to make sure the sink is properly supported. Over time the heavy weight of water and a garbage disposal may loosen the seal between the sink and the bottom of the countertop. Such sinks only work with weight-bearing and water-resistant countertop materials; they aren’t well suited for laminate or tile counters, which have too many weak points along seams and grout lines to support the weight of the sink. Condensation build-up under the counter can cause mold; faucets must be attached to the countertop or wall. So, what did you decide, take it or not? Write in the comments!
